What is crack sealing tape ?
Crack Sealing Tape is a prefabricated high-adhesive tape material used for road crack sealing and waterproof repair. It is usually composed of one or more layers of elastic polymer modified asphalt, non-woven fabric or polymer protective film. It adheres the tape firmly to the cracks in the road surface by "direct application" or "hot melt compaction", thereby achieving the purpose of waterproofing, dustproofing, anti-aging and delaying crack expansion.
Product composition
Surface layer: wear-resistant, anti-skid, anti-ultraviolet materials, such as aluminum film, non-woven fabric, PE film, colored asphalt particles, etc., used to protect the tape from damage by sunlight and wheel wear;
Core sealing layer: mainly modified asphalt glue, rubber-based composite glue or polymer hot melt glue, which is the key part of the tape's adhesion, waterproofness and flexibility;
Bottom isolation film or release paper: convenient for keeping the glue layer clean before laying, and can be pasted after tearing it off during construction.
Working Principle
Crack sealing tape works mainly through the following three mechanisms:
Surface bonding and sealing: The surface of the crack is sealed by the close adhesion of the adhesive layer to the road surface on both sides of the crack, preventing rainwater and mud from entering the crack;
Internal pressure buffering: Some tape materials are elastic and can deform under temperature changes and vehicle loads, thereby buffering the tensile stress of the road surface and delaying the expansion of cracks;
Waterproof and anti-seepage protection: The tape forms a continuous waterproof barrier that effectively isolates rainwater erosion, especially suitable for areas with frequent rain and snow or large temperature differences between day and night.
Technical performance and quality indicators
Tensile Strength
Definition: The maximum tensile force that the tape can withstand under stress, which measures its ability to resist breaking.
Standard value: ≥1.0 MPa (for surface composite tape)
Significance: Ensures that the tape is not torn when passing by, especially suitable for areas with high traffic frequency;
Adhesion Strength
Definition: The degree of adhesion between the tape and the asphalt or concrete surface.
General requirements: Adhesion to asphalt surface ≥1.5 N/mm
Adhesion to concrete surface ≥1.0 N/mm
Significance: Prevent edge splitting, delamination or bulging, and ensure long-term adhesion;
Temperature Resistance
Definition: The physical stability of the tape under extreme temperatures.
High temperature stability: no flow or blistering at ≥70℃;
Low temperature flexibility: no cracking or shedding at ≤ -25℃;
Waterproofing Ability
Definition: The ability to prevent rainwater or surface water from entering the roadbed through cracks.
Water seepage requirement: ≤ 0.3 L/㎡/h (simulated rainfall conditions)
Waterproof layer integrity: No water leakage within 72 hours after pasting;
Test method: Water filling test or negative pressure penetration method;
Applicable scenarios
Repair of early cracks in asphalt pavement
In the early stage of asphalt pavement construction or in the middle of service, especially in areas with drought, large temperature differences or frequent heavy traffic, common longitudinal cracks, transverse cracks, reflective cracks or edge cracks will gradually form. If not sealed in time, rainwater can enter the base layer through the cracks, causing peeling, subsidence and even damage to the pavement structure.
Concrete pavement joint treatment
Concrete pavement is very rigid and has significant expansion and contraction, so it is very easy to crack in the expansion joints, plate joints, and cracks. If not handled properly, it will lead to problems such as cement board breakage, joint seepage, and loose structure.
